Machine embroidery can feel unpredictable – thread breaks without warning, designs distort, alignment goes off, or a fabric behaves perfectly one day and poorly the next. The Embroidery Tips & Tricks Series is designed to address exactly those frustrations.
This series focuses on core embroidery techniques and problem-solving, shown through live demonstrations on the instructor’s machine. You observe, make notes, ask questions, and are welcome to record video so you can revisit the techniques at home.
Good embroidery starts before the first stitch is made. This session focuses on correct hooping techniques and stabiliser choices, and how they directly affect stitch quality, alignment, and fabric stability.
You’ll see how different fabrics respond to various stabilisers, how over- or under-stabilising causes problems, and how hooping tension impacts registration and distortion. Common causes of thread breaks, bird nests, and tension issues are addressed throughout, with practical solutions demonstrated in real time.
The session also includes a short, practical look at how embroidery software supports better outcomes – from understanding stitch direction to identifying potential problem areas before stitching.
Design placement can make or break the final result, especially on garments, bags, and home décor items. This workshop focuses on accurate placement techniques and how to position designs consistently and intentionally.
You’ll learn how to align designs correctly on different items, how to compensate for seams, curves, and construction features, and how poor placement often contributes to tension issues, distortion, and thread problems.
Troubleshooting thread breaks, bird nests, and tension remains a core thread throughout the session. A short embroidery software demonstration shows how on-screen placement and previewing help reduce errors and improve confidence before stitching begins.
Larger designs, borders, and continuous patterns require precision and planning. This session focuses on multi-hooping techniques and accurate end-to-end matching.
You’ll see how alignment errors occur, how to prepare designs for multiple hoopings, and how to maintain consistency across sections. Attention is given to stabiliser choices, hoop positioning, and sequencing to prevent misalignment and visible joins.
Thread breaks, bird nests, and tension issues are addressed within the context of long or repeated stitch-outs. The software segment demonstrates how digital planning significantly reduces risk when working with multi-hooped designs.
Some fabrics and threads demand a different approach. This workshop explores how tricky fabrics behave under embroidery and how speciality threads affect stitch formation, tension and durability.
You’ll observe how fabric choice, stabilization, needle selection and thread type work together – and how imbalance between them leads to common embroidery problems. The session covers metallics, variegated threads and other speciality options, with practical guidance on when and how to use them successfully.
A short software demonstration shows how design density, stitch type and sequencing can be adjusted to suit challenging materials and threads.

No. These are demonstration-based sessions. You only need a notebook, pen, and one hoop.
Yes. You are welcome to record the entire workshop for your own reference.
This series is for confident beginners who already know how to load a design and run their machine. It is not a learn-from-scratch embroidery course. We highly recommend that beginners consider our 1-to-1 Machine Embroidery Mentorship Programme before attending any of our machine embroidery workshops.
No. The focus is on techniques, understanding and troubleshooting – not completing a project.
These sessions focus on technique practice rather than finished projects, allowing you to concentrate fully on skill-building.
No. Software is demonstrated as a support tool. Owners of software will also see how basic edits can improve results.
No. The content applies to all embroidery and combo machines, regardless of brand or age.
Handouts will be provided in certain sessions.
