Pockets That Work - Not Just Exist

A pocket should feel natural to use, sit flat and look like it belongs there.

But too often, it doesn’t… It pulls. It bulges. It twists out of shape. Or worse – you avoid adding one altogether because you’re not quite sure how to get it right.

Let’s change that! During this workshop, we will focus on turning pockets into a strength in your sewing – not a frustration.

You’ll discover how to approach pockets with clarity and confidence, so every one you add feels intentional, functional and beautifully finished.

Learn the Techniques That Make the Difference

This is a hands-on, technique-focused session designed to give you practical skills you can use again and again.

You’ll explore:

  • Clean, professional patch pockets
  • Neat, functional in-seam pockets
  • How to avoid pulling, twisting and distortion
  • Correct placement, depth and usability
  • Reinforcement techniques that help pockets last
  • How fabric choice affects your final result

You’ll start by working on test fabric – giving you the freedom to experiment and understand the process – before applying what you’ve learned to a garment of your own.

We’ll also include a guided demonstration of a more advanced pocket style, so you can see what’s possible as your skills grow.

A Tips & Tricks Series

The Sewing Tips & Tricks Series is a collection of focused, hands-on sessions designed to help you master the everyday techniques that cause the most frustration – so you can sew with more confidence, more control and consistently better results.

Instead of working on full projects, each workshop isolates a specific skill and breaks it down step-by-step. By practicing on test fabric in a guided environment, you gain a deeper understanding of the technique – without the pressure of getting it perfect the first time.

Small techniques. Big confidence.

Walk Away With Confidence (and Real Results)

This workshop is about knowing:

  • which pocket works best for which garment
  • how to place it so it feels right when worn
  • how to construct it so it holds up over time

You’ll leave with samples, practical experience and a clearer understanding of what makes a pocket truly successful.

FAQ

  • Sewing machine (in a clean, good working order and serviced within the last year)
  • Your sewing kit
  • 1–2 garments you’d like to add pockets to (so you have options), matching thread
  • You’re welcome to bring your own pocket fabric if you have something specific in mind.

Confident beginners to advanced sewists wanting better garment finishes.

You’ll work hands-on with patch pockets and in-seam pockets and you’ll see a demonstration of a more advanced pocket style.

No, welted pockets won’t be covered as a hands-on technique in this session.

They require more time and focus than a 3-hour workshop allows, so we concentrate on pocket types you can confidently learn and apply.

If there’s enough interest, we can introduce a dedicated welt pocket workshop in future.
