MAKE & WEAR: Men’s Beach Shirt

Thursday, 7 May, 2026 - Thursday, 14 May, 2026

Free

Make Him a Shirt He’ll Actually Wear

You’ve thought about making something for him… a shirt he can actually wear. Something simple, comfortable – not just another project that stays in a cupboard.

But then the doubts creep in…

“Will it fit?”
“Am I going to get the collar right?”
“Is this going to turn into one of those frustrating projects I never finish?”

So the idea gets put aside. This workshop changes that.

In this Make & Wear Masterclass, you’ll be guided through making a men’s beach shirt in a way that feels manageable from the start. Not rushed. Not overwhelming. Just clear, structured progress – one section at a time.

As part of a complete garment, you’ll work through the parts that usually cause hesitation:

  • The collar
  • The yoke
  • The button stand

By the end, you’ll have a finished shirt –  ready to be worn by your husband, your son, or even your grown grandson – knowing you made it properly.

What You’ll Be Making

A relaxed men’s beach shirt with clean, wearable structure:

  • Convertible collar
  • Short sleeves
  • Front button stand
  • Chest pocket
  • Double yoke with back pleats
  • Side slits for ease

A practical garment – the kind that gets worn often, not just admired once!

A Make & Wear Series

This workshop is part of our Make & Wear Series

Make & Wear is an in-person garment construction series of masterclasses that teaches you how to make clothing with better fit, better finish and better wearability – using a structured sequence of garments and step-by-step guidance.

Why We Chose This Pattern

We’ll be working with a pattern from EazyStitch, a South African brand known for clear, well-thought-out designs.

Their patterns are laid out in a way that helps you follow the construction logically, without confusion or unnecessary complexity. That makes them especially helpful when working through garments with multiple steps.

This specific shirt pattern gives you the opportunity to learn proper techniques – like collars and yokes – in a way that feels structured and achievable within a guided setting.

Who This Is For

This workshop is suited to sewists who:

  • Are comfortable using their sewing machine
  • Have made a garment before
  • Are ready to take on something more structured

It’s ideal if you’ve been wanting to make something meaningful for a husband, son, or grandson – and want to do it with guidance rather than trial and error.

Please note:
If you’ve never made a garment before, this workshop will feel like too big a step.

How the Workshop Works

This is a two-part masterclass. We use class time for guidance, technique and the more detailed steps and leave the repetitive, time-consuming work for home.

First Session: Friday, 10 April @ 9am-12pm

  • Pattern layout and cutting
  • Understanding the construction sequence
  • Preparing your garment pieces
  • Sewing:
    • Chest pocket
    • Collar
    • Yoke with pleats

You’ll leave with real progress made, and clear direction for what comes next.

Between Sessions (Homework)

You’ll complete the more repetitive construction steps at home. This part is important.

It keeps the class flowing and allows us to focus on the more detailed work together in the second session. If the homework is not done, it will be difficult to keep up.

Second Session: Friday, 17 April @ 9am-12pm

  • Final assembly of the shirt
  • Hemming
  • Finishing details
  • Bringing everything together into a neat, wearable garment

FAQ

  • Your sewing machine (serviced and in good working condition)
  • You sewing kit (sharp pins, scissors, etc.)
  • Fabric, buttons and interfacing
  • Machine needles (80/12 recommended)

Unfortunately a kit is not available for this workshop.

Of course; you’re welcome to!
